In a landmark move that could redefine the intersection of artificial intelligence and payments, PayPal has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to enable instant checkout and commerce within ChatGPT.

The collaboration will see PayPal adopt the emerging Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), effectively turning ChatGPT into an intelligent shopping interface capable of connecting hundreds of millions of consumers with tens of millions of PayPal-enabled merchants.

The integration means that ChatGPT users will soon be able to move seamlessly from conversation to purchase — searching for products, discovering brands, and completing transactions in just a few taps.

PayPal will underpin the payments layer, powering both its wallet and delegated payments API to process transactions for cards and PayPal accounts alike.

Users will retain access to the familiar protections and post-purchase services that have long defined PayPal’s ecosystem, including buyer protection, order tracking, and dispute resolution.

Transformative Impact

For merchants, the impact could be transformative.

Through Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will provide a single, compliant access layer for small businesses and global retailers alike, bringing their product catalogues directly into ChatGPT without requiring individual integrations.

By 2026, merchants across fashion, beauty, home improvement, and electronics will be discoverable through conversational search, with PayPal handling merchant routing, validation, and orchestration behind the scenes.

This model could open a new frontier for digital commerce — one where consumers no longer need to browse websites or apps but can simply ask ChatGPT for what they want and check out instantly.

“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said Alex Chriss, PayPal’s President and CEO.

“By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps.”

The alliance also marks a deepening of PayPal’s commitment to AI innovation.

The company will expand its use of OpenAI technologies internally, scaling ChatGPT Enterprise access to its 24,000 employees and deploying tools such as Codex to accelerate software development.

In essence, this partnership positions PayPal not merely as a payments processor but as a foundational infrastructure player in the emerging ecosystem of agentic commerce — where conversational AI transforms the way consumers discover, interact with, and ultimately pay for goods and services.
