Klarna has announced an expansion of its long-standing collaboration with Google, becoming one of the early supporters of the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) — an open standard designed to enable secure, agentic payments across digital platforms.
The move marks another step in Klarna’s transformation from a payments provider into a key infrastructure player in the emerging world of agentic commerce.
Developed by Google, AP2 aims to standardise how digital agents — whether AI assistants, chatbots, or other automated systems — initiate and complete payments on behalf of users.
The protocol provides a framework for transparency, security, and interoperability, helping to ensure that consumers can authorise and manage transactions safely, regardless of the platform or device.
David Sykes, Klarna’s Chief Commercial Officer, described the development as “an exciting new frontier” that demands “transparency, trust, and smarter payment experiences.”
He added that Klarna’s deep integration with Google products such as Google Pay, Chrome’s autofill, Google Play, and Google Cloud positions it well to help define a responsible payments architecture for this new era.
For Google, Klarna’s involvement reinforces the cross-industry collaboration needed to make AP2 a scalable standard.
Stavan Parikh, VP and GM of Payments at Google, said Klarna’s participation “exemplifies the critical collaboration required to build open, secure frameworks for the future of commerce.”
By extending its existing technology — including real-time underwriting, flexible payment options, and transparent credit terms — into agent-driven environments, Klarna aims to ensure consumers can shop confidently even when their digital agents take the lead.
The partnership underscores how AI-driven payments are rapidly evolving from concept to reality, with Klarna and Google jointly paving the way for more intelligent, seamless, and secure digital transactions worldwide.
