Fancy a move further afield in 2024? If you’re considering moving country, there are many factors that come into play: how easy or difficult it is to secure a good job that will further your career, what the cost of living is like compared to your current outgoings, and quality of life will all come into play.
Recent data tracked these considerations in relation to pursuing tech jobs and based its rankings on the number of tech companies present, average broadband speeds, average rent for a one-bedroom apartment and its percentage of average yearly salary.
While the U.S. came out on top with cities including Washington D.C., New York and Dallas taking three of the top five spots, several European cities came up trumps too – writes Aoibhinn Mc Bride, Content Editor, Jobbio.
Zurich
The Swiss city, which took the number eight spot within the top 15 cities, may have a high cost of living—the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city is $2,767 per month which equates to 23% of average yearly earnings—but it also boasts salaries to match. Tech professionals can expect to earn $142,264 per year.
Copenhagen
Denmark’s capital city also scores high on the list thanks to its good broadband speed and salaries. Tech workers can expect to earn $108,051 per year on average in Copenhagen, and pay around $1,862 per month in rent, or 21% of their annual salary.
London
Post-Brexit, London’s tech scene is thriving and despite work permit restrictions, it remains a top destination for tech workers. Despite salaries being lower than its U.S. and European counterparts, coming in at approximately $79,337 per year and the cost of living being higher—average rents of $2,655 per month equate to 40% of annual salary—the abundance of tech companies (10,100) and tech roles hiring (12,128) puts it in a favourable position to attract talent.
Paris
While tech salaries in France tend to be on the lower side—the average is $58,047 per year—the cost of living corresponds with this and tech workers can expect to pay around $1,393, or 29%, of their yearly earnings on rent. Similar to London, Paris also boasts a high number of tech companies (3,439) with job listings to match (5,396).
