The update enables businesses to accept contactless debit and credit card payments, as well as mobile wallets, using only an iPhone – eliminating the need for additional hardware.

Initially introduced by Apple in 2022, Tap to Pay on iPhone was positioned as a frictionless solution for SMEs to accept in-person payments.

Block’s latest move signals a deeper alignment between its two flagship brands – Cash App and Square – bringing the latter’s suite of payment tools into the hands of smaller or previously underserved merchants.

The capability is available to users with an iPhone XS or newer and can be activated in a matter of minutes via the Cash App.

Internal beta testing suggests promising results: Block reports that merchants who enabled Tap to Pay on iPhone saw a 35% increase in payments volume compared to a control group of “similar” sellers not using the feature.

The company says over a million Cash App sellers are now eligible to access the functionality.

The development is particularly significant for micro and nano businesses, many of whom operate without traditional point-of-sale infrastructure.

“We’re meeting sellers where they are,” said Owen Jennings, head of business at Block.

“By embedding Square’s tools directly within Cash App, we’re opening the door to a new generation of entrepreneurs who want simplicity, speed, and flexibility.”

This move further blurs the lines between peer-to-peer payments and merchant services in Block’s ecosystem – strengthening its appeal among digitally native sellers and reinforcing its competitive stance in the evolving mobile commerce landscape.
