ID-Pal strengthens ID-Detect

With regulators warning that synthetic identities and digitally altered documents are becoming a defining threat of the decade, the identity verification provider is positioning its enhanced toolset as a crucial line of defence for banks, fintechs and regulated enterprises.

Fraud driven by artificial intelligence is expanding at speed.

The UK’s Minister of State for the Home Office recently warned that AI will dominate the domestic fraud landscape over the next five years — a stark reflection of how generative tools have lowered the barrier to producing convincing fake documents.

Traditional verification systems, built for an earlier era of fraud, are now struggling to distinguish legitimate applicants from synthetic identities refined through AI enhancement.

Four Layers of Protection Against Next-Generation Threats

ID-Pal’s upgraded ID-Detect engine now counters four major categories of presentation attack: screen replay attempts that recycle stolen imagery; forged or reprinted document submissions; portrait substitution, where photos on genuine IDs are swapped; and a newly strengthened suite targeting AI-driven manipulation.

This last category includes deepfake IDs, synthetic documents and tampering executed through photo-editing or generative tools — all increasingly used in high-value fraud schemes.

By analysing pixel structures, texture inconsistencies, pattern anomalies and other digital artefacts, the system flags manipulated documents with immediate effect.

Suspicious files are placed in quarantine along with a clear explanation code, giving compliance teams a prompt and well-defined basis for action.

The model’s enhanced accuracy also reduces false positives, allowing genuine applicants to pass through onboarding flows with minimal friction.

A Timely Intervention as Fraud Pressures Intensify

The payments industry is signalling the urgency of this technological shift.

According to research from The Payments Association, 72% of sector respondents now cite fraud as their leading concern, with the rapid evolution of AI-enabled criminal techniques outpacing many firms’ legacy detection systems.

For organisations processing large volumes of identity checks, tools like ID-Detect offer a way to scale compliance without magnifying operational costs.

The results are already tangible.

UK car financing platform Finset reports that ID-Detect has intercepted more than £3 million worth of attempted fraud since its integration, while improving regulatory alignment and reducing manual review workloads.

Equipping Enterprises for an AI-Dominated Fraud Era

ID-Pal’s leadership argues that robust, AI-powered verification is no longer optional.

Head of Product Rob Sheehan emphasised that fraud teams face relentless pressure as attackers become more technically sophisticated, while founder and CEO Colum Lyons described AI-driven document fraud as “the biggest threat our industry has ever faced.”

As regulators tighten expectations and fraudsters refine their craft, solutions capable of detecting deepfakes at the point of entry may prove indispensable to safeguarding the integrity of the financial system.
