The payments landscape has changed radically after COVID, with more diverse payment methods and huge growth in mobile and digital channels.

Alex Reddish, Managing Director at Tribe Payments, discusses the huge opportunity that exists for acquirers in this new landscape.

It took more than 50 years for cards to displace cash as the favoured way to pay across Western Europe and North America. In the last ten years – and especially since the pandemic – we’ve seen the way consumers pay change beyond all recognition, with payment methods such as digital wallets, account-to-account payments and Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) all making significant inroads into the dominance of cards.

This diversification has taken place against a backdrop of massive digitalisation. Transactions conducted over the internet (e-commerce) grew by 17% in 2021, with the mobile channel accounting for three-quarters of this growth. Tribe recently commissioned research to examine how merchants are responding to this new landscape – and what they’re looking for from acquirers. The results suggest the status quo is no longer an option, and acquirers need to adopt a completely different approach for success.
